Desaxman's Strategy Guide (Beta Draft)

Are you a good Fin, or a bad Fin, or the Wicked Fin of the West?

Financier seems to be a level that you either stay at for a long time or stay at for a day or two. Once you become a Fin, you can promote to Founder at will. Well, technically at will, since there are no objectives to meet to promote except to have a planet submitted and reviewed and linked to the game. All you can do at Fin is buy shares in other companies, and play with futures just as you could in Trader.

As mentioned in prior sections, every Fin seems to have his or her own philosophy on how to play the rank. Some refuse to ever sell shares back. Some will sell back if asked. Some return half of their shares, others return all, etc…it is a rank with few rules except for a maximum number of shares in a portfolio – 35, 000. A Fin could own more than 35,000 (such as in the case of a stock split), but could not purchase more shares until they are below that number.

There really is no such thing as a good or bad Fin. As long as you play within the rules, you are free to play this rank however you want. Just remember that you still want to make money on this unless you are going straight to PO. When you buy shares, your company balance decreases. When dividends are issued for your shares, your company makes money back. If you bought shares for 1000 apiece (of course, every block of 100 shares you buy causes the price to go higher, and vice versa), and receive dividends of 10/share, you are still down about 990 per share.

You can make that money back by selling the shares back to the broker, assuming the current share price is higher than what you paid for it. Or, you can wait for more dividends. And once a player makes it to Fin, they don’t have to issue any more dividends since dissatisfaction no longer applies. Most Fins only issue dividends when they themselves need personal cash for some reason.

What most long term Fins wait for is for a player to promote to Founder. The Fin then gets a significant “final” dividend from the liquidated company treasury. If they own 1000 out of 10000 shares, they will get 10% of the final company balance. Usually, it’s a pretty nice payout.
